AVS File won't open

Post by NetJunior » Mon Apr 07, 2003 11:20 pm

My error is as follows:

AVIFileSource: couldn't open file
(J:\filepath\filename.avs, line 1)

it won't open in Vdub either.

Here's what the text is inside the avs file:

AVISource("J:\filepath\filename.avi")
BicubicResize(480,352,0,0.5)

Any suggestions, or blatantly obvious things I'm overlooking?

Does the directory in where you have your AVI file have spaces in it?

Does your AVS literally say:

AVISource("J:\filepath\filename.avi")

or does it say:

AVISource(" J:\CowboyFinal\Final.avi ")

:?:

Shouldn't you be using, say, D2V instead of AVI?

If he's trying to use DVD footage, yes. I would assume though that he's using it for something else, like say, being able to use DivX footage in Premiere by having AVS frameserve it.... I'd figure this is the case, as he has AviSource( and not Mpeg2Source(

Alright let's see, it does literally say the CowboyFinal etc, just was using filename as an example. But anyway, not sure about the D2V stuff, cause this is my final export of the video that I'm trying to compress in Vdub and stuff. As I read through the guides, it has you export your video in Microsoft AVI, and then create a .avs file for it, and then put it through Vdub and stuff. But for some reason that .avs file I have won't open, nor will Vdub open it.

So, it seems like you followed the guides, and you now have a HuffYUV master for your vid that you want to compress for web distro?

You don't really need to use avisynth for that. You can just open the file directly with vdub, and set up your cropping, postprocessing, resizing, and compression chain directly in vdub.

Or are you saying that vdub won't open the .avi file at all?

Maybe check your final output settings in Premiere, or whatever editing program you're using, and make sure everything is set as close as possible to what the guide recommends.

avi is a container, not a codec. What codec are you using for the export of your final master? (hint: you want to use HuffYUV)

Yes, I did use HuffYUV, which produced the massive 2 gig file. Well, I attempted to open the .avi file through Vdub, and now seem to have found the source of the problem.

"Cannot determine file type of "J:\CowboyFinal\Final.avi"

So perhaps there is a problem with my ver. of the codec? Or somewhere along the lines of exporting the video?

Sure sounds like it.

I've never had that particular problem, so all I can do is suggest a few generalities.

Hopefully, you got the version of HuffYUV you're usling from the amv.app
If not, I think 2.11 is the final version.

I'd also suggest going over your project settings for both video, audio, etc.

Make sure everything is set right. 1.0 square pixel ratio, no fields, huffYUV output codec, uncompressed audio, all accordig to the Guide.

Then try "hiding" your preview files from Premiere by putting them in a subfolder, and make it render the whole thing to a new file.

I just thought of something else. Are you using Win98 by any chance? if so, you may be bumping up against the 2gig filesize limit, and are unable to render your whole video at once.

If so, you could try setting your work area to half the size of the vid and rendering the work area, then render the second half to another file, and then join/compress them in vdub.

Definitely time to upgrade if you're still using 98.
