what are some good codecs?

Post by Xyle » Sat Jul 26, 2003 7:32 pm

i know this has probably been posted before (i'm lazy) and i'm pretty sure this is the right place to post it... anyways.

What are some good codecs for exporting (encoding whatever) video that maintain good quality but don't make the file size huge. I have really crappy codecs and if you guys could help that would be super.

the codec's I like are H.264 and Xvid - however Xvid is not understood by Video Editors
. and the other one's are MPEG-4.V3 and Divx 5.0.5 - however Divx 5.0.5 is also not understood by Video Editors either!

what codec you use totally depends on the size of your Video.
. my standard size's are 840 X 360 and 768 X 576 and these 4 work just fine ^^

post-it, there haven't been any real decent H.264 implementations developed yet O_o so how can you be using it?

Most people will agree there are 5 major noteworthy lossy codecs these days, each with it's own set of strengths and weaknesses, all delivering excellent quality.

RealVideo 9
Windows Media Video 9
XviD
DivX 5
DivX 3.11 SBC

RV9 Pros: The best codec hands down as far as image quality is concerned. Simple to use. Free.
Cons: RealNetworks has a nasty history and most people still refuse to use it because of that. Requires either RealOne player or an illegal codec package to play back. Only partially open source.

WMV9 Pros: VCM codec available to encode WMV9 in avis. Very good quality. Free. Simple.
Cons: Microsoft also sucks as a company. Requires windows codecs to play back. Completely closed source.

XviD Pros: mpeg 4 compliant codec, available in vcm/vfw form. Totally free and open source. Can be decoded by any iso mpeg4 decoder.
Cons: a bit complicated. Sorta lacking sofar as quality goes compared to some of the others. Some features buggy.

DivX 5 Pros: mpeg 4 compliant in vfw form. Under heavy quality increasing development ATM.
Cons: Pay. Evil. Closed source.

DivX 3.11 Pros: insane tweakability to make it look good. Lots of people use it.
Cons: Just about everything else. Not truly Mpeg 4 compliant. Not great quality compared to some of the other codecs. Old. Rusty.

A bunch of people still use Mpeg 1, though it's not the best option for quality. It is almost guaranteed to play back on any computer though.

Yeah, that's it. I recommend XviD or RV9.
