Converters? [convert WMVs to other formats]

Post by Vallune » Tue Oct 07, 2003 7:42 pm

Does anyone know what programs I can use to convert my WMV files to something more workable, like MPEG or avi?

No, didn't realize that. I never dealt with WMV much. I do know it doesn't work on ASF though.

Oh well, I never pretended to be an encoding expert... I admit I was wrong then.

I've seen converters that *claim* to be able to do it, but they format the vid into an old avi format - which you *then* have to convert if you want it into something you can use in Vdub. If you're working with wmm 1.0 you should be able to make it ntsc avi format - which you can turn to mpg using a few converters (google search) but it isn't compliant with VirtualDub (the avi). Your best bet is to try some google searches for wmv to mpg or wmv to avi. I use Showbiz as my wmv converter, you may find other movie makers that will take wmv files - if they can convert to huffyuv a high quality wmv can look great afterward. But there's no easy solution. :?

And this should have gone in 'Video Software Help' or 'General Video.' ^_~

avisynth can open wmv through directshow. Alternatives would be EOvideo or I'm sure you could do it in graphedit.

Whoa, freakin sweet, I just tested and you can just attach the wmv source output pins right into the avi muxer and filewriter in graphedit and instant wmv-in-avi.. like.. without even re-encoding. It's probably not a good idea, but it works, which is cool.

But that means you've still got Windows Media Audio (which, for some reason, on my machine, seems to be the same as "DivX ;-) Audio") and Windows Media Video, right? So it's not that much more workable... it's just in a format that people won't immediately tend to shy away from.
