Well, first you mean another 'format' - not another software. But it really depends on what editing program you're using. Most editing programs will give you options - even WMM (windows movie maker) gives you an option to save the vid as avi rather than wmv (windows media).

So...what editor are you using and what format do you want to have your final vid in? You'll probably need to so some conversion/compression with different software, but it depends on the editor you're using to begin with.

Okay, is it version 1.0 (no clip effects, no spikes in the audio timeline) or version 2.0 (effects, spikes, more complicated looking)?

If it's version 1.0 then when you go to produce the vid and choose the format you will see an option for 'more' formats - hit that and select the NTSC AVI option - that will give you an avi version of your vid. Do some google searches and find a good avi-to-mpg converter. Pop the vid in and you'll have an mpg version ready for distribution.

If you have version 2.0 you can *try* the avi option - it's listed under the 'more formats' option - again as NTSC avi format. But check it first - if the audio sounds garbled, then don't use it. If it sounds fine, you should be able to convert it to mpg the same as you would with version 1.0 - just get an avi-to-mpg converter.

If the audio *is* garbled, you'll need to do some extra steps, namely produce the vid as 'high quality large' - this will give you a 640x480 wmv file. You can import this into VirtualDub and convert it to huffyuv using an Avisynth script, but things get much more complicated. Try the avi format in wmm first - if it works you won't need to do this. If it doesn't, let me know and I'll try to mark out the steps to get your wmv vid into mpg format without too much quality loss.

i have version 2...i think, but there is no button that says "produce". when i hit the create button(or produce) there was no option that said {format}. it only said setting(you can choose 3 different settings), title, artist, date, description, rating, that was it. can you help me out please?

.wmv files are actually well compressed and very good quality, they just can't be viewed in certain media players; .avi is more flexible, that's why people use it.

No, that sounds like version 1.0 - with version 2 your first page would ask you to pick where you want to save the vid (comp, cd, etc), then the second page asks for name of the vid and location, and 3rd page is where you choose the format (under 'other settings').

But this sounds like version 1.0 in which case - go check out the microsoft homepage and see if you can upgrade to verison 2.0. It's free, and *much* nicer to edit with - you can actually have markers on the audio.

Anyway, in version 1.0, you go to 'save movie' and the first page at the very top it says 'setting' - choose 'other' and then for the 'profile' choose 'dv avi ntsc' - that's your avi option.
