... What the hell am I talking about?

How could I forget that 5.1 also let you keyframe effects, especially after I'd done it myself?

They just didn't call it that back then.

I still like the way Pro handles it better, though.

I use 6.0 myself. I tried Pro and didn't like it. They took out all the good amv effects i liked and made all the others hard or impossible to work. Pro seems geared more toward professional editing, not fun amv editing.

That would I believe be their intent... they are I believe trying to compete with FCP (on the Macs). From what I've seen and heard, they incorporated a lot of the features FCP has. And, truth told, professional video-makers have the money to spend and therefore influence the company more- many AMV & amateur editors either pirate the software or (like me) buy the educational versions which cost a good bit less, so changes that annoy us really don't translate into lost dollars to Adobe...

Yeah, except for the fact that they never <i>made</i> a version of Premiere Pro for the Mac (I've read somewhere that this was <i>because</i> of the success of Final Cut Pro and Final Cut Express), and won't let us edit in QuickTime format anymore (though I never saw the point of that to begin with), and removed the QuickTime Effects (unfortunately, because there were some good ones in there).

Correct, from Pro out Premiere is PC-only- they're leaving the Mac platform to Apple (and Avid, technically) and focussing solely on the PCs at least where video editing is concerned- that's why I said FCP (<i>on the Macs</i>). They are still maintaining AE, PS, and Illustrator for the Mac, just conceding that their Preiere developers/coders' time would be better spend focussing on the one platform. I've not played with Pro at all to know they ditched QT and QT Effects (I've never really used them myself), but I do know I use the ability to at least import QT files fairly frequently as trailers tend to be released online in QT format. Just another reason I won't be moving to Pro for a while.

All told though, I think the moves to a more 'professional' feel in Pro would be a good thing. In my looking around at the professional editing community and from what Nate has said, Macs (with Avid and increasingly FCP) have tradiationally dominated the field, and some balance on the PC side (with Prem. Pro & from what I've heard Vegas 4 in Windows and Cinelerra and the custom-written programs for Linux) would be a good thing.

What about the motion settings, they changed those as well  . Now i can't use them!!! Meh, i'll figure it out...like a year later  . I thought the new transparency method was much better, it is a lot more accurate than rubberbands but is, I agree, a bit harder to use.

Actually, the motion settings are one thing I LIKE about Premiere Pro; you can finally get precise destinations, down to the pixel. I hated how you always had to guess with Premiere 5.1. What was it, the width was 80 in the motion window no matter what your resolution was? Or something like that. And another thing about 5.1, if you wanted to center the clip, it was always (0,0.5), not (0,0) as you would expect. But all that is fixed in Pro.

My point is simply that its getting harder and harder to find the old video editing software that has cool effects and is decently simple to use with some practice. I spent about a month finding a legitamate copy of Premiere 6.0, I can't imagine what its going to be like in a year or more :(
