The reason you can't convert a VOB to an AVI of the same size is because VOBs are MPEG2 - and you can't properly encapsulate MPEG2 streams in an AVI container (ok, you COULD, but no one's made a codec hack to do it).
The point of the AVS method is to translate the VOB files into pseudo-AVI files. There's a part of FFVFW which will allow you to make AVI files from AVS files - essentially make a tiny AVI file which then point to the AVS, which then points to the VOB file. Read up on ffVfW (it's included in the AMVapp, if I recall).

It's a program that comes with ffvfw (and ffdshow these days, I think) that will take an AVISynth script and make a small fake AVI out of it. It's what Ermac was talking about when he said:mannayz wrote:Elaborate a bit, please. Is MakeAVIs a codec or a program?Scintilla wrote:Have you tried using MakeAVIs with the AVISynth scripts (instead of making HuffYUV files) and importing them into Magix that way?
It helps if you include the line ConvertToRGB32() at the end of the AVISynth script before wrapping it with makeAVIs.ErMaC wrote:The point of the AVS method is to translate the VOB files into pseudo-AVI files. I know the AVISynth + makeAVIs method works, at least for WMM2, because I've seen it done.
Apparently the people at AX have figured it out...ErMaC wrote:The reason you can't convert a VOB to an AVI of the same size is because VOBs are MPEG2 - and you can't properly encapsulate MPEG2 streams in an AVI container (ok, you COULD, but no one's made a codec hack to do it).
(My apologies to RHIT for stealing their bandwidth.)

No one ever said AX knew what they were talking about
However they might be serious, as Pinnacle's DC1000/2000 cards DID have an IP-frame only AVI MPEG2 codec for their cards. Yes - I and P frames only, but still, MPEG2 in an AVI container. It was stupid, but it worked.
However, only with those cards. I seem to recall they had one of these cards at one point (back when Shaun Hendricks was running things) so they might not be COMPLETELY off their rocker...
