There is a link right above you that has some software you can use. A lot of people user Adobe products. Premiere, After Effects & Photoshop are very popular. You're no restricted to those. Very good videos have been made in other programs such as Magix or Windows Movie Maker.
Adobe products are costly. Look on eBay or if you're going to college you might get a discount on an academic version. Ofcourse there are less legal ways to get it, but we don't dicuss that here.
You need a decent computer so you're not spending ten hours just to render an effect. Anything made in the last 3 - 4 fours years should be ok. I would reccomend atleast a 1 Ghz CPU, 256MB of ram & 10GB of free hard drive space, just to start off with.
You do not need a DVD burner or player to make an AMV. You should get a DVD-ROM drive for your computer. This will let you take the video right off the DVD digitally with no quality loss. There are guides for doing this. There is a link on the front page of this website. Read the guides and try to follow them/understand them. A lot of people have to read them a few times. It's not really a cakewalk.
Yeah, so... get some software, some DVDs, check out your computer, read the guides... open the software manual and start reading and editing... Just... uhh yeah...
Go for it man! :O
