I remember reading in the AVISynth documentation that you can use the command SetMemoryMax() at the beginning of your scripts to help out with problems with speed. If it's not playing back fast enough, increase the memory.
However, it has been widely suggested that you use a LOW value with SetMemoryMax() to avoid memory problems when you use a lot of scripts simultaneously in Premiere (or your editor of choice).
I've also got an Athlon XP 2000+ and 512 MB of RAM, and my scripts also play fine in anything before IVTC... with IVTC, it's a little laggy, but not SO laggy that I can't work with it.

err one more thing, when i render a preview in premiere nothing really happens, it just plays it in the preview window (which i could do anyway). I remember when I used to use premiere there used to be a red bar until you rendered and then it was green...what happened to that? I'm using the PIC MJPEG codec to edit with, any idea?

Premiere Pro won't render anything it thinks it can play back at the full frame rate, even if it really can't.
This is, in my opinion, the most annoying feature of Premiere Pro.
If you apply effects or transitions, the red bar will show up at the top of the Timeline, and whatever parts are covered by the red bar, you CAN render (after which they'll turn green).
