Problems wif Premiere and effects

Post by worldangel » Sun Sep 19, 2004 3:31 am

hi,

I have just started to make my very first AMV :P Yea, am very excited but at the same time I am also facing a little bit of trouble even after I have turned all the slips I want into .avi files. The first problem is that they are all taking up too much space in my PC. The whole .avi files and .vob files are taking up at least 20GB in my hard drive and it is killing my comp. I can't even play movie in my PC anymore bcos of this. Anyone got an idea how to solve this? I have deleted most of the useless junk in my PC tho...

The second problem is that Premiere is causing me trouble. Esp during playback time. It is playing really slowly and it is not smooth at all. My video clip gets all jerky. Is this related to the lack of space I have in my HDD?

Third problem is I would like to know how I can activate the sepia effect on my video clips. And I would also like to make the characters mouths stop moving at certain points in my AMV because I find it very distracting. Sum of you in the chatroom suggested freeze frame but it is difficult for me to do that because my video clips are rather small and it is hard to cut and paste things together. When I tried to do that, the AMV looks jump...

So any ideas and suggestions ppl?

If you've already converted all the clips you'll need to .AVI, then you can delete the .VOBs. Unless you're using them in your project alongside the .AVIs, which I can't recommend.

Are you previewing? If not, then jerkiness is to be expected.

If you're using Premiere 5 or 6, it should be one of the QuickTime Effects.
If you're using Premiere Pro, then you have to do it the hard way (I had to do this for DV:UI): apply greyscale, then tint or H/S/L until it looks the way you want it.

Zoom in on the timeline so that they're not so hard to cut, and use Frame Hold.

If there's other stuff moving in the scene besides the mouths, a bit of creative Photoshopping may be required. Or overlaying the closed mouth with the Garbage Matte and applying motion if necessary, something I'm fond of doing.

Hmm, I tried to do that just now, but it is kinda hard to get the garbage matte exactly on the mouth. And why do I have to put it over the closed mouth and apply motion if I want the mouth to stop movien? I would appreciate it if you can give me more tips. Thanks.

Well, you could also use an image mask to get the characters mouths to stop moving. Create a bitmap with a black box in the same location as the character's mouth (the backround solid white...you might have to reserve it though...I dunno how the newer premieres work with it.) Then, in premiere, insert a image mask, choose the bitmap you just created and then in the overlay track have the chracter with the mouth closed from the same scene. This will kept the backround the same in most cases, but it won't work if the characters face moves around a lot. Also, you can create the whole scene into bitmaps and edit it bitmap by bitmap, but that's harder and more time consuming.

Yeah, it's by no means failsafe. It works nicely in some scenes, but not in others.

No no, I meant put the closed mouth over top of the scene and use the motion settings on it to keep it in the proper place.

Keyframe the Scale under the Motion settings. 100% is normal size, 0% is zoomed out to nothing, etc.

And RTFM/HF. :?
