Windows Media Player: what the hell is wrong?

Post by Akashio » Wed Jun 29, 2005 2:50 am

WMP will play a vid for 1-2 minutes and then all of a sudden, for no reason, go completely black. The audio still plays and the video seems to cut to black at unpredictible times. Even when you seek backward and forward it stays black.

I've tried reinstalling WMP, but it is hopeless. WMP 6.4 doesn't do this, but I don't want to use 6.4.....

Can anyone help me? THANK YOU in advance!

Well I've got no guarantees since I don't know this specific problem, but usually the best thing you can do for these sorts of problems is download all your latest hardware drivers and then get a really good codec pack like Defiler or something. Even if that doesn't fix this specifically your rig will run better for it anyway. Hopefully that helps though.

You could also try another player that also works with your DirectShow filters, like Windows Media Player Classic (google it). If that doesn't work, then it might be a problem with your codec for that kind of video - something like that happened to me when I installed a codec pack. Anyway, a sure-fire solution is to use a stand alone video player, like the VLC Media Player, that will decode the video on its own.

I used to have the same problem, too. Redownload the video, and if that doesn't work, update your codecs. That should work.

VLC is one player I use alot. And it is good. But if on the long shot it doesn't work (which will be when hell freezes over), try BSPlayer. It is my backup player, it's stable, and it fixes most of my problems (the few) i've had with VLC.
