uhh no Vegas does NOT cost $800, I got Vegas 4 for $100 at Best buy o.0 about a YEAR AGO.. and I believe that Adobe gives you an entire month to try out their software from what I hear...

Windows Movie Maker is alright I dont have anything against it (aside from the fact that I couldnt make the pos work)

but you can use VirtualDub MOD to convert VOB files... but you will need DVD Decryptor to unlock the DVD first.

if you are really interested in entering a CON I'd suggest you watch a ton of AMVs first and see whats good and whats bad, and make decisions on what you think is good or bad, that way you dont get disqualified before even getting to show... also be sure to look up the Con rules... o.0

as for Naruto and One Piece... they either crop the subs (or in many cases dont) buy bootlegs, or summon up the money to buy the R2s

That's because they use downloadable Raws or Fansubs(or damn bootlegs). It's rare that anyone has used region2 DVDs for making one.

I have a bit of a question about getting started, and I figure it's best to ask on an existing board than make a brand new one.

I know the rules of this site are that you can't use videos you download.

Does this involve, say, downloading a series (say Ronin Warriors) that you /own/ but don't have the hardware nor software to rip the DVDs?

I don't believe they really care. Just do it, and don't tell anyone. I'm sure most people on this site does it anyways... (not me of course... meh w/e.)

Don't worry about it, go for it.
Why do people complain about things? Why can't they just be happy that they were made for them?
I respect everyone's right to not like something, but complaining about it will acomplish nothing...

ABOUT DOWNLOADED FOOTAGE:

I would say that if you are going to download a series that you already own there are a few things that will probably dissapoint you

1. the quality will be lower, no matter what if you use DVD footage the video will be cleaner than fansubs...

2. if you dont crop the subs people will bitch at you, they will complain how horrid they are and wont stop or anything, you will keep hearing about it untill you crop the subs...

The way I rip DVDs is free, so you dont need to pay anything, if you get the AMV APP: http://www.animemusicvideos.org/guides/ ... mvapp.html

you can use DVD Decryptor to unlock the DVDs then you use VirtualDub MOD to convert the VOB files into AVI, just gotta make sure you use the right compression and deinterlace..

Well if there is no other way to do it then go for it. All that matters is that you actually get the video done. Now i won't hold that against you just make sure that it's not a wmv as those don't like to work on some peoples sytems. Mpegs one of the best ways to go (despite what many claim) for compatability since i'm assuming you won't care about super quality. All i know is that all the mpeg ones ive ever watch have worked while AVI can easily mess up if not done right. Just get better whatever you do.

This is a valid point... But on a different subject, there's Vegas, then there's Vegas Movie Maker. Notice the huge price difference. Also, check out two of the sticky posts at the top of this topic, might help to give you some direction concerning what software to use.
