MKV to AVI

How do i convert .mkv to .avi ?

Make sure to use "Direct stream copy" to make sure you don't lose any quality by recompressing. Though some audio and video streams supported by MKV may not work in AVI (for instance, Ogg Vorbis audio).

i downloaded virtualdubmod and tried opening the mkv file but an error came up.

The error is:
An out-of-bounds memory access (access violation) occurred in module 'VirtualDubMod'.

I'm using this program to convert an MKV file to avi, and I'm using the direct stream, but when I try to load it up in Vegas it doesn't show the video or the audio..
??

problem with enccoding or something?
