I have it installed from the AMV app installation. I'm not really familiar with the program so I'm not sure if it's doing something different now than it was before when everything was working.

Allright I just tried uninstalling the codec and the problem persists.

I did, however, try reinstalling Premiere Pro 2 again. Figured might as well try it with the plugin since my situation couldn't actually be worst.

It's weird now with Premiere Pro 2. I can actually open AVS files again (but still cant in 1.5) but Pro 2 won't let me open more than 1 AVS file at a time. If I have one avs file in my library and I try to open another, the program immediately crashes - no error message or anything. Just an immediate close.

So to recap the problems:

Adobe Premiere Pro 1.5 - can't even open up AVS files b/c I get error message.

Adobe Premiere Pro 2.0 - CAN open AVS files but only one can be in the library at a time or else it crashes. This is just as bad as not being able to open avs files because I work with lots of different source materials at once.

hmm... this is a really odd problem. try this...

1) reinstall ffdshow if you haven't already (or reinstall the amvapp).*
2) reboot into safe mode
3) uninstall the amvapp and all versions of premeire
4) if there are any other remains of avisynth, uninstall those also.
5) reboot and install premiere and only the avs plugin.

*: this is to make sure the uninstall information for any files that weren't really uninstalled are there. in safe mode these files wont be in use and should be deleted when you perform the uninstall.

you might also want to try reinstalling your graphics drivers. it might not make a difference but i've had problems in the past due to currupt drivers.

You won't believe it Pwolf! I followed your directions (uninstalled everything and reinstalled everything) and I'm finally back to work! Man, I seriously can't believe how much crap this issue has put me through but its nice to be back up and running.

There is one minor issue however. I'm not able to play huffyuv encoded avi's on windows media player anymore. When I try to open up the avi, an ffdshow icon shows up in my taskbar and windows media player closes. I'm not sure how my settings were before so do you have any suggestions on the best way to get huffyuv encoded avis to play on windows media player?

Many thanks for all of your help Pwolf. I really appreciate the persistence that you had to solve this problem.

Disable ffdshow's support for HuffYUV (since I assume you already have the HuffYUV codec).

I went into the "VFW Configuration" tool for ffdshow and disabled huffyuv decoding there but nothing has changed. When I open the avi file an ffdshow icon still shows up in my taskbar. Do I need to make any changes anywhere else?

Here's how the configuration screen looks now:

Yes, in the standard "Video decoder configuration" (DirectShow instead of VfW). :P
