Experiencing problems with windows media and adobe premiere

Post by Shirik Of Dazed Dreams » Sun Feb 19, 2006 7:35 am

since installing the various codecs recommended for AMV creation (xdiv, HuffyYuff, LAME) and the AMV program pack I have been having problems with both windows media player (version 10) and with Adobe Premiere 6.

Windows Media: I no longer can view avi files in windows media - to open an avi file into windows media player causes the program to crash immediately. Last night it was just whenever the file was stopped, now its as soon as the file is opened.

Premiere: The program has now decided to crash every 5 minutes - usually whilst editing clips (for the curious - clip size is usually around 10MB) or while importing items into the time line. As you may guess this is rather frustrating and I have uninstalled and reinstalled this program 3 times with no luck.

I anyone could assist me I'd be greatful.

aha!

appears I have discovered the problem!

The problem was caused by a codec (or possibly a program..) called ffdshow audio.

I don't even recall dling it c.c may have occured in my desperation to learn audio compression last night ^^;;;;;;

just a note - it might not of been ffdshow itself that is responsible but it may have clashed with codecs already on your computer causing programs to crash. So be weary of the codecs you download and make a note on what there for.

aaah. I shall make a note of this for future references - I dont normally use codecs you see (furthest I went previously was having Divx on my pc for a period of 3 days so I could watch a film my friend sent me ^^;;)

If I remember correctly, Windows Media Player 9 / 10 has some issues with ffdshow. What you can do is to find out what codecs you have already installed that ffdshow is also trying to support and disable ffdshow's handling of those codecs so it doesn't clash with other programs. If you installed the AMVapp, definately uncheck ffdshow's support for HuffYUV in the Video decoder configuration and VFW codec configuration. While you are at it, also go into Audio decoder configuration and uncheck any codecs listed that you dont want ffdshow to handle, such as MP1, MP2, MP3, WMA1/7, WMA 2/8, etc.

An alternative is to use Windows Media Player 6.4. It's located in your C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\ folder as mplayer2.exe. Or use Media Player Classic (go here for a .zip file if you cannot open a .7z file) or VLC Media Player.
Having trouble playing back videos? I recommend: Image

When I reinstalled FFDshow recently I had the same exact problem of Windows Media Player constantly crashing. Just uncheck FFDshow support for the video and audio codecs and it should work ok.
