Converting .MOV on MAC
So I've been dutifully following the guide on editing AMVs in iMovie, but I would like to edit in Final Cut Pro. Unfortunately, I can't import the .MOV files
Does anyone know some type of freeware I can download to convert the .MOV files into something (anything!) I can use (.avi, preferably).
I keep finding programs, but they're all for Windows. Anyone.. anyone!?

I'm ripping my dvds with OSEx 0.0101b, then converting the vobs using DivXRay 2.6 into .avi files. I edit my clips in Quicktime to .mov files which I can import into Final Cut Pro but you could import the whole .avi file into FCP. You might check this site for a free copy of DivXRay 3.

I tried that, and the quality goes to shit every time. I tried playing with the preferences and then when I try to import it into Final Cut it asks me to rerender it in Media Manager which just kills the quality even more.DJ_Izumi wrote:The QuickTime player can export to AVI...
But I'm really new to Final Cut, so maybe I'm missing something... ?

Final Cut can recognise many different filetypes. I personally have been using the method described in the iMovie guide - using Mpeg Streamclip to demux to a standard .m2v clip and then converting it to Apple Motion JPEG-B with DivA. Make sure you check things like the framerate and resolution before converting to .mov. However if you want to save space Final Cut should be able to read pretty much anything you convert the clips to through quicktime. You can even just import the VOB file directly into Final Cut, though I don't really recommend it - can be a bit dodgy.
I personally wouldnt convert to AVI for Final Cut editing. The two systems generally don't get along and the rendering can be really slow. As for the error message there could be any number of reasons for this. .mov is just a container and it depends what kind of compression you have used.
In Audio/Visual Settings in the Final Cut Pro menu you can set the standard for how your footage will be processed and rendered. If these are set wrongly it could be the cause of the .mov files not being read. In the Sequence Presets I use DV PAL 48kH, at 25 fps.
That's all i can suggest at the moment.

I've gotten a General error message when importing files. Sometimes it happens when I'm trying to import more than one file at a time. When I figure out which file is getting the error message, I usually re-clip the .mov from my .avi and experience no problem with importing the second time around.RainbowFae wrote:I don't understand.. I've never seen the File Error: message.
