Codec Problem (Maybe)

Post by Kaoru.Niikura » Mon Apr 17, 2006 3:19 pm

Hello. I'm new to video editing so please bear with my ignorance.

I started using Premier 1.5.1 just a few days ago and I think I've got a hang of the basics, but I still have this codec related issue I can't seem to resolve.
So far, the only way I've found for Premier to actually play any kind of video at all is to encode the footage I want to use in Virtual Dub using either Huffyuv or Lagarith. The problem is that, encoding with these two codecs makes one episode larger than 5GiB, which is limiting my options considering my low disk space >_<

I'm pretty sure I'm doing something wrong, maybe in Premier itself or Virtual Dub, I really don't know. I've read a few guides but they're not helping eather. So, If anyone could give me some advice, I would apreciate it.

Thank you for your time.

Isn't there any other similar codec that can give low file sizes?

lagarith will give you a smaller filesize but it is still very large. i would suggest cutting out each clip/scene in vdub and encode it seperatly instead of doing an entire dvd or episode.

Meh...after all the problem was in the disk..probably.
One final question, which codec should I use to re-encode the vid once it's complete?

any footage that comes from dvd will turn out quite large (compressed with huffy or lagarith or uncompressed)
after you're done editing a good codec to use is xvid
mpeg1 or (preferably) mpeg2 is a good alternative (as well as divx)

most of the opinions that I've heard leads me to think that .wmv files are not too great (compressed with windows media encoder/wmm I think)

xivd/divx is the more popular choice... there is a step by step guide in the main A/V tech guide for doing that.

Alright, I guess that's about all I need to know right now.
Thank's everyone for your support. I'll be sure to mention your help on my upcoming AMV (It's not much, but it's the least I can do) ^_^

Well, I'm not out of the storm yet, another problem came up.
Not as bad as the previous, but it still bothers me a little. No matter how or with what I encode it, I'm getting these occasional scanlines at the bottom of the screen.

Here's an example of it:

Anyone know what might be causing this?
