I never understood the people going for Mac. I understand Final Cut Pro, but Avid compares entirely in terms of power. If you want convenience, nothing equals Vegas, it's fast and efficient editing. If your looking for a balanced editor I'd say go with Premiere, it's pretty close to Avid and FCP for what you can do and remains easily manoeuvrable, especially since the new UI. Plus, if your looking for these massive effects, even Avid or FCP wont make it, so you'll probably go with After Effects, since higher end Compositors like Combustion and Digital Fusion cost more and have less support online. And for interdisciplinary, Premiere-AfterEffects-Photoshop really blends well together. Still, personally, I recommend Vegas over Premiere, because it's so much more efficient and really shortens the production time. And if your looking for pro stuff, just because you want to feel pro, then try Avid, but it's a cpu hungry hore.

So, ya, in the end it's your choice, but it just seems to me that if you go on Mac, you just have your options cut down. Mac simply handicaps you, even if you're doing movies. But remember, the softwares does'nt make up fot the talent. People used to do just fine with 2 VHS, so no matter which one you use, the end result is up to you.

personally i think the production time is a lot longer becuase you have to go through an extra step to use avisynth and also searching through your source footage and grabbing the right scene takes much longer (stupid trimmer is slow and hard to seek through). Well, unless you make huffyuv clips in vdub then i guess it doesn't really matter at all if you are using premiere or vegas.

I'v said it once and I'll say it again: VEGAS! It doesn't crash, easy to pick up and use, and there's next to no limitations to what you can do with it. Give it one week and you'll be hooked, truse me.

All software will crash, maybe not for some people, but others with different machines will have that problem. And every software has at least a few limitations. You just need to find the software that has the least limitations for what you want to do, or find ways to work around them. And for beginners, ease of use should be important.

My recommendations are (based on available help/support):

Adobe Premiere / Pro (or Adobe Production Studio Standard/Premium)
Sony Vegas

The other pro software, Avid Liquid and Apple Final Cut Pro/Studio are more pro-level and don't seem to be as widely used outside of the pro community. FCP, if it had AviSynth-type support would probably be listed above along with Premiere and Vegas, but if you are a Mac owner, then you really have no alternative (other than finding an old copy of Adobe Premiere 6.5 for Mac). If you are currently on a Windows machine, I recommend skipping FCP and Mac since the learning curve is going to be steeper.

You may also wish to consider getting Adobe After Effects (which is part of Adobe Production Studio) and some type of higher-level image editing software like Adobe Photoshop (again, part of APS), Corel Paint Shop Pro or Corel Photo-Paint (part of Corel Draw).

From experience, Vegas only crashed on me once, but I was still able to save my project before having to close Vegas. But yes, it does have limitations, all programs do.

Ya, it's true Avisynth would be nice. Someone will make a plugin soon, I feel it  On the other hand, you can manage to frameserve by combining VFAPI with Avisynth, but, it kind of sucks.

 I actually LOVE the trimmer. It's true at first, I was like: how the Hell is that stupid crazy no good trimmer suposed to trim anything. Until the NLE fairy came and showed me the way, now I simply love it.

never mind u all, i got Arcsoft Showbiz DVD editor, it ROCKS. But i found that this site sucks, because any song plus all the clips to take up the length of the song is gonna be way to big, if any of u all wanna see it and have AIM ill send it to you and u can tell me what u think. If your interested my SN is DanteNiven, by the way u need the huffyuv codec to play it, if yo dont have it you should get it, its a great thing to have.
