ffdshow's VFW interface will handle it, which will completely bypass having to install DivX 3.11;) itself and avoid any problems that may arrive with that.
Otherwise, it should be perfectly safe to change the FourCC to 'MP43' - in which case either the MS MPEG-4 codecs or ffdshow's VFW will handle them. Since the original DivX was just a hack of MS MPEG-4v3 (or whichever version it was, but I'm pretty sure it was v3), the FourCCs are interchangable. As Zarxrax said, a FourCC changer comes with XviD, at least if you go with Koepi's XviD builds.
Note: For ffdshow's VFW interface to work, it 1) obviously has to be installed and 2) has to be set manually to decode said formats (change it from 'disabled' to 'libavcodec' on the Decoders tab). It doesn't come preconfigured for this sort of thing.
You can get the newest ffdshow builds that include the VFW interface at:
http://x264.nl
If you've installed the CCCP, you'll need to uninstall the version of ffdshow you currently have before you install the new one, since the CCCP build of ffdshow doesn't include the VFW interface.
