Need help with video type conversion

Post by Husse67 » Thu Aug 31, 2006 7:28 am

See, I use Pinnacle Studio for editing...(Don't laugh, I know some of you are stuck with Movie Maker,) and it only takes "type two" DV-style AVIs. Most of my exported footage from DVDs and VHS is "type one" AVI, or the kind you make in Movie Maker and most applications.

So I need some kind of program that can convert AVIs to MPEG, if there is such a program for cheap or, preferably, free. See, I can't really buy stuff on the internet, and besides that, I'm on a dial-up connection, so it's difficult. So, does anyone have some program that converts AVIs to MPEGs that I could use that isn't, you know, a limited size "trial" application? T'would help, thanks!

If you just need MPEG-1 encoding, TMPGEnc will do that for as long as you need. It can do MPEG-2 encoding, but only for 30 days unless you pay. http://www.tmpgenc.net/en/e_main.html

But as Minion stated, Pinnacle Studio should have the capability to encode MPEG-1 & 2. For MPEG-2 input/output (and MPEG-4 (AVI), DivX, and whatever the hell "Windows Media Format Non-encrypted DVD Titles" is), you need to activate the product via the internet. There is no fee for activation. Link to product specifications for version 10.5 here. Older versions should be similar.

similar? kinda. previous versions actually worked, though. it's what ultimnatly made me switch to premiere.
if you can, go down to version 7. stable, and gets the job done. i still use it for smaller projects.
lost all faith in pinnacle with the version 10 release (after buying the program, you have to BUY every effect, 90% of transitions, and the ability to export in certain formats, wtf?)

I probably should have been more specific when I said "similar". :P

Pinnacle Studio 9 & 10 were a couple of programs that I was considering on purchasing. Based on people's experience with version 10, I'm glad I didn't. Although ultimately, I decided on Magix MEP 10 because of the 16 track timeline editing and cheap price.

I have version 9 of Pinnacle. So it handles MPEG and type 2 AVIs. But MPEG-4 "type 1" AVIs and Windows Media files cannot be used in projects. That's why I want to convert my type 1 AVIs to MPEG so I can use them. Now, yes, Pinnacle v. 9 will export in Windows Media formats and type 1 AVIs, but it only imports DV and MPEG. No MPEG-4 allowed, apparently. But if this program you linked does MPEG-1, it should work, I hope. To my knowledge, Pinnacle at least accepts MPEG-1...it just doesn't like it very much. :)

That's the funny thing. I don't have ANY bittorrent footage.

Yeah, that's right. I ALREADY use DVDs. But my DVD capture program is old as the hills, (Pinnacle doesn't rip DVDs or anything,) and totally un-user friendly, and exports in *gasp* type 1 AVI, or MPEG-4. Wonderful. It's called GordianKnot, and it's, like, early nineties stuff modified to read DVDs, so.....yeah.
