I think I will reencode all the files to HuffYUV, but if I do and I leave the names the same, will it still work in my Premiere project? Or will I have to redo all the timings?
I'd just make two subfolders in the one you now have your eps in, called divx vers and huff vers, save your huff-encoded avi's into the huff folder, then move the divx versions to the divx subfolder.
When you next start Premiere, it will say "guh! where are the source files?" point it towards the huff versions, and all should be well, particularly, if you save the huff versions with the same filename as the divx versions. (that's why saving to a different folder is important, so you don't overwrite your original file)
I mostly blame Premiere for the problems, not the divx codec itself, BTW.
As for why some clips work, well, you got lucky. "Now it works, now it don't, this one will, that one won't" is typical when using divx with Premiere. As for ALL your clips being divx 5.02, that means nothing except your chances of having problems & crashes is increased with each clip you add.
