Premiere is probably the predominant software used here, but as you can see there are a number of other options that can work just as well if you know what you're doing (trythil and Koop's latest videos are good examples of this). If you're just looking to get started and see whether or not you really want to get seriously into AMV editing (which isn't something to be taken lightly, the time and financial investment is far from trivial- well, the financial is less if you're using Cinerella and Linux like trythil, but there's still source footage to buy), I'd suggest downloading an evaluation copy of one or two of the programs and making a short video to see whether it's for you. I know at least Adobe has a 30-trial version of Premiere, at last count, I'd figure there may be the same or similar for Vegas and the likes. Cinerella is always free monetarily, but you have to either already have or be willing to spend the time setting up a Linux install for it. The 30-day trial should be enough time for you to figure out whether you like the program or not and want to shell out for it. If you're a student, you can get Premiere or even the whole Adobe digital editing suite for a reasonable price (at least compared to the non-academic prices).
