Sure if throwing away CD-Rs is practical
Dumb question about archiving very large files

Yeah. Definitely go with some nice CD-R backups. Be sure to make at least two copies of everything, though ('cuz if one CD goes...).
Best thing I can suggest is saving the audio, itself, as one file, and then saving segmented AVIs from VirtualDub (you can save HuffyUV to HuffyUV, set the filesize to no more than 700 MB... it's great).
So yeah. You really don't NEED to go spend money to get some nice cheap archiving done. I do, however, think that eventually you might want to invest in a new hard drive for physical, on-the-disk backups of the files, too.
