I read it in an FAQ/biography about Kevin Caldwell. When he finally started editing with a PC, he said Bill Gates was the "King of Pain" or something... It said that the reason why there is no one standard file of the Engel video is because all the ones floating around out there (Kazaa etc.) are captures off the VHS tape that he submitted, and he never created an official internet distro of that video. Or course, the guy who wrote the FAQ could have been completely full of crap. This is the Internet, after all.dwchang wrote: Do you know this for a fact?
And no I don't mean to sound sassy, I'm asking because I personally don't know. Although I have heard that he used a editing program.

What you probably want is to know what works best for YOU right?
Try going to the official sites of the software that you are interested in and looking for a demo.
Most of the major players have a decent demo out there, like premiere, After effects. You can even get programs like Maya and Photoshop on demo. If you want to make something substatial with them, do some reading and planning before you install them since you'll only have 30 days to finish your project.
When you are done, you can encode it with yet another demo such as nero, or follow the guides found locally.
