ARGGH or darn it, darn it, darn it

Post by geniejunkie » Sat Aug 23, 2003 9:23 pm

Okay so I don't have the gear to do this stuff, so sue me, but what I did have was working fine, until now. Now large source files I was using are full of green digital crap! And what really tees me off is that my laptop doesn't have this problem. So no problem then right? Just a screwed up codec? NOOOO! I've uninstalled and reinstalled and gone nutz trying to figure it out, and guess what I can't delete nor uninstall windows movie player 9.x which means I can't start from scratch even!!!! ARGGH!!!

These are vobs I used VE to turn into divx compressed avi's and they worked fine a few weeks ago!!!

Any ideas?

PS: Please don't bash my meager software its all I freakin got.

I think you really need to supply a bit more info...
Is this your exported and final amv that is stuffing up?
Is it when you are previewing with your software?
What software do you use? VE? I'm not familiar with it.
you are editing with an uncompressed codec right?

Meh, I don't know that much really, the reason I even replied to this was...
I had similar weird green digital pixalation when I tried to play Xvid files after I had just reinstalled DivX (I'm really beginning to hate this codec). I can't remember exactly how I fixed it. I think I reinstalled Xvid. I believe (not sure though) that Xvid will also play DivX so installing that codec may solve your problem (a link can be found in the Read ErMaC & AbsoluteDestiny's Friendly AMV Guides) or you can just search on google.

Funny you never really mention what you're using. But you say it's divx. That helps a bit. Was it like DivX4/5 from divx.com? Divx3.11, crappo Angel Potion or nAVI, VKI, :/.

Too many to list.

What I would do, would be to remove/uninstall any codecs you have installed. :| It sounds like you probably already did this, but just in case try it out. You can remove codecs that do not have a software uninstaller by going to the 'Device Manager' & looking under "Sound, video & game controllers'. There's an entry for "Video Codecs", double click and hit properties. It should give you a list.

Remove anything that the Nimo Codec Pack might ever use. There's a list here.

Then I would just install the DivX3.11 & ffdshow. Now if you made these using DivX4/5 then you may need to go get a DivX4/5 vfw decoder. Which DivX.com offers one, but ":O ugh, spyware may be in it. You might be able to find a spyware-less version, but I don't use DivX5 so I would not know where to get one.

In the future don't use DivX. It is not meant for editing. If your problems still continue. Use VirtualDub(www.virtualdub.com) and convert the files to huffYUV. HuffYUV can be found @ http://www.divx-digest.com/software/huffyuv.html.

:O - goodl uck

Well, its kinda a long story. Here's the short version: I'm poor; I use Windows movie Maker 2; I import avi files made from ripped vobs by way of virtual dub. So I use big source files, though not lossless, to make different amvs. I never know what I might want from a avi so I keep it after using it in other amvs. Well I made a batch of amvs with these source files and now they've gone nuts on me. I actually converted the vobs so long ago i can't remeber what codec I used, but it was divx 4 or 5 I think. Anyway, I'm going to read what's been posted here carefully, but i just thought I'd follow up with a clarfication of what i'm doing.

Are the original source files bad? Have you tried playing them in windows media player? Or is it that you can no longer view the vids you made with those files?

If it's that you can't view the vids anymore, it's a codec issue with your media player. If you're trying to reuse your original clips, see if they'll play in windows media player (if you've installed xvid or divx the files should play there) - if they play fine, it's the movie maker. If they don't play, it's a codec issue.

Also, hufyuv *will* work for wmm 2.0, you just can't trust the preview and it'll crash a lot. If you want small files you can store and reuse and you're exporting to wmv (in which case quality won't be great to start with) try using Vdub to compress to lead - you'll see that option, it's an old compression, but wmm seems to like it better than divx.

Also, if your divx files are good (meaning they play in media player) try converting them. You'll suffer a big drop in compression, but if you can't get the footage again it may be your only option.

Best bet, check your codecs by playing the source files - if the green is in the media player the files are either bad or you need to reinstall the codec. If they play fine, try converting them.
