newbi needs help with choosing software

Hey everyone. first off defaintly have to say amvaholic seen more then i can count and have had an idea and been dieing to want to make one for a while now. so many good ones out there and i'm here trying to make my first one.
i have an idea i'd like to try and trying to find some software that lets me run multi clips at once on a background and hopfully but not completly neccisary have them... so to say come trasition out of the background in become to primary clip. as for knowing what i'm doing i have no clue all i have done is make some scratch stuff hear and there with acrosoft showbiz but mostly just trying every out and seeing what does what. hehe amvaholic but i probably have no right to say as much as some people i'm sure but definatly going to try to pull this off one way or another.
oh and for the software i'm just a poor college boy so not exactly a huge bugget for the software and as far as the clips i can get them from friends with the full dvds of the anime.
any help or recommendations on the software mainly or tips please let me know

love the idea and going to try to find it. only problem is no$ . hehe i'm in college i could just lay back on the food and live more off of amvs lets see, all three cost about 1... ok not bad ...0... ok couple days food... another 0!? i dream of that much !?!?!?!? another 0 ack. hum lets see 1000 think think think... crap need fan to clear the room of smoke now. yay 200days of saving lunch money at 5 a day if i'm lucky ! hehe who buys at store prices anyways. must find friends or good old ebay! the hunt is on! if excel can do it so can i! in the mean time! here menchi menchi menchi!

oh and btw love the amvs dj_izumi

and if anyone has any cheaper ideas meeting my hopes in the first post please share =)

Hint: www.campustech.com can get you discounts on this kind of software if you're a college student.

If you're really strapped for cash, try Windows Movie Maker 2 (assuming you're running Windows) -- it's free. So's <a href="http://www.gimp.org">The GIMP</a> (substitute for Photoshop).

But check the sticky thread devoted specifically to a list of software.

Personally, I like Sonic Foundry's (or since they were bought out, Sony Media Software's) Vegas 4.0 for video editing (under Windoze at least - given my ultimate choice, I'd have a nice Mac G5 and Final Cut Pro 8) ) ... far easier to get around than Premiere, tons of included transitions, effects, generators, etc.

If you're on a tighter budget or just starting in video work, there's a simplified, but still very powerful, version of Vegas, now called Screenblast Movie Studio.

Both integrate nicely with the rest of SF's product line, such well-known names as SoundForge and Acid Pro, if you're into doing extensive sound editing or programming your own loops and such as well.

only problem is that its kinda a pain in the ass to buy it, and then realise that ya have to register the mpeg codec to use it. but still, acter dling trials of shitloads of vid edit programs, vegas4 was the only one worsh my hard begged cash
