That probably comes with Windows Movie Maker - and you can upgrade it to version 2.0 by going to the Microsoft website.

But Premier is the editor of choice - go buy it, it's only $500+ not including the pretty 'After Effects' necessary to make a good video. ^.~

There is no piece of software that's "necessary" to make a good video. I won best sentimental for Cowboy Blues and the video doesn't have a single transition in it - I could have made it in VirtualDub if I wanted to.

There's already a thread touching on this here:

And I believe Downwithpants has a guide in his sig on how to use wmm 2.0 - it should tell you the basics, though you can really get it just by reading the help section. It's aimed for the average person wanting to make home vids of pictures, so the instructions are pretty simple. Just go to the microsoft website, and look up windows movie maker 2.0 - that will take you to the file. It's free, so you should be able to upgrade so long as you have version 1.0.

And yes, check out the guides on the main page - they'll tell you all about ripping your dvds and how to get good compression (if you *do* switch to premiere, that will set you up for it ^.~ )
