Free hard drive restoration software?

Post by y2kwizard » Tue Apr 27, 2004 7:42 am

Hey, guys, I know that hard drive restoration software doesn't exactly fall under VIDEO software, but this does pertain to AMVs. I recently reinstalled Windows XP, and for some reason the partition that I had on my main storage hard drive has been completely messed up. Windows doesn't recognize the partition (it recognizes the hard drive) and wants to format it. I can't access my old AMVs or raw source footage that I'd ripped before the reinstall.

I ran a trial version of some restoration software, and it found all my old AMVs and source footage, but it cost money to restore the files. Does anyone know of some free restoration software? I am running both Windows and Linux, but I do most of my editing in Windows, so a Windows program would be awesome.

Thanks so much! I greatly appreciate any help.

I have found TestDisk to be an excellent tool for recovering partitions that have been botched in some way. Effective use of the tool requires a fair amount of technical expertise, but if you're attempting partition recovery, I assume you have that :)
