codec problem.. i think

i have some downloaded video that has a few scenes i want to use in an amv. however, said video is slightly screwed up. occansionally, it will go blocky and sometimes it fritzes out completely- on other comps it doesnt do this. can someone give me a hand figuring out whats wrong? im clueless on which codecs could be causing this, because i think it may be a codec conflict...

Today's Brainstorm:

Don't use downloaded footage. There are too many problems associated with it as well as tryign to edit it in Premiere or whatever program you want to use.

Then you have to convert to something editable. No, the artifacts won't go away.

No it isnt. You can always rip or capture it yourself. If you're gonna make a downloaded-footage-amv and you're not even willing to do your homework and at least search for decent quality stuff that you can at least filter a bit, then dont even bother asking for help with downloaded stuff.

What is the footage of? Chances are people here can tell you where to get a hard copy of it - unless it's available only via bootleg, then you're on your own.

And another question, is this a fansub video, or someone's music video? If it's the latter, try asking the creator where *he* got the footage from - so you don't have to deal with his compression artifacts. If he put it online, someone out there must have had a hard copy of it. Online material doesn't originate there, you know.

God I hate morons.You realize thats like saying you can only buy tomato's at the supermarket.Sure they will do the trick but homegrown taste a hell of a lot better.

No footage is download-only with certain exceptions of anime web-shows (like web-comics instead of hard copy comics ... I know there's a few web-only shows out there but they're usually in Flash format if not in WindowsMedia, Real, or QuickTime).

As one mentioned, it would be nice to know which anime this is. On some cases, you might end up buying the Region2 DVDs from a place like http://www.YesAsia.com or http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/ (or a bootleg but I wouldn't recommend it for both technical and moralistic reasons) ... obviously, that is much more expensive than Region1 DVDs but at least it inspires you to take a class in Japanese and learn something from it ... well ... that's what made me take Japanese class. But aside from the point, working off downloaded material can be rather complicated because of stuff like artifacts and subtitles, too.

However, if you still want to work with downloaded content, you might want to reinstalling your codecs and see if that fixes your blocky image problem. If it doesn't fix it, it's probably because the person who encoded it didn't bother watch the video before distributing it. However, if you're working with Premiere, you need to convert the clip to HuffYUV. It won't increase the quality of your video but it will make it a little easier to digest with Premiere. (however, you might need a big hard drive for that)

Translation - Make an AVS file. Also make an MJPEG encode. Edit with the MJPEG. At the end, switch out to the AVS file.
