Ok. This requires you to have TMPGEnc, dBPowerAmp Music Converter, the dBPowerAMP RealAudio decoder plugin, and any of the Matroska filter packs (preferably the Full pack) that contain the RealMedia Splitter for Windows installed. It also requires you have either one of Real's players or RealAlternative installed.

Now how to convert:

1)Because you have the splitter and either of those players installed, you can open the RM file in either TMPGEnc or AVISynth (if you have AVISynth installed) because they both support DirectShow in one way or another. I personally use the TMPGEnc method.

1a) For AVISynth, type

Code: Select all

DirectShowSource("c:\file.rm")
in notepad and save the file with a *.avs extension. Now you can open it in VirtualDub or VirtualDubMod or apply your own filters (or you could even open it in TMPGEnc after applying the filters, but I'm not sure if it accepts the sound).

1b) For TMPGEnc, there are two ways:

1b-i)Convert the RM directly to MPEG using TMPGEnc's encoding wizard. In this case, after you get the audio using dBPowerAMP, you'll need to convert the wave to an MP2 and use TMPGEnc's 'MPEG Options' to multiplex the two streams together, or just make sure VirtualDub isn't set on Direct Stream Copy when you put your video into it, since VDub can't perform Direct Stream Copy on an .mpg file.

1b-ii)Convert the RM to AVI using TMPGEnc's manual interface ('Load' Button -> "Extra" Folder -> "unlock.mcf" file) by loading the RM in using the "Video Source" field. Go to the "File" option in the top menu, the "Output to file" option, and select AVI. You can then choose a compression method for your video. Hit 'Save' and the video stream will be decoded to AVI without sound.

[Because TMPGEnc doesn't support decoding RealAudio, you can turn off the audio compression option]

2) Now, right-click on the RM file and choose the 'Convert To' option (dBPowerAMP will put this into your Right-click menu when you install it). Since you have the RealAudio plugin installed, it can decode the video's audio stream for you. It will come up with a little video screen, but don't mess around with it while it's decoding, which shouldn't be too long, especially if you have a 1GHz machine. After it's finished you'll have a wave file.

3) Now, go into VirtualDub and open your video (the 'Open video file' option in the 'File' menu). Next, open your audio in VirtualDub using the 'Audio -> WAV Audio' option or in VirtualDubMod, the 'Streams -> Stream List -> Add' option. Make sure that you have 'Video' set on 'Direct Stream Copy' unless you're going to compress the AVI you made with TMPGEnc. Finally, go to 'File -> Save As...' and type in a name for your video. You may also need to go to the 'Frame Rate' option and tell it to 'Change so audio and video durations match' to be able to sync the audio again (I don't remember needing to use this, but it might happen). After you save, you'll have an AVI file that you can either play with any normal media player or use TMPGEnc to encode an MPEG-1 for a Video CD so you can watch it on your DVD player.

Support the future of video and audio encoding : matroska as container, USF as subtitles standard and CoreAPI as codec interface API in future
