I have used Adobe Premire 6 and also Premire Pro. A lot of people use Final Cut, which is a really good program to use.

I really like Sonic Foundry Vegas Video 4.0, and the newer version 5.0. I find them easier to work with than Adobe Premiere, Pinnacle Studio and Video Deluxe (yes, I tried them all at one point or another  ) without being limited in my editing experience (ogh, what a term).
Last night I dreamt I ate a ten-pound marshmallow, and when I woke up the pillow was gone.

currently i use vegas 4, and im playing around with wax a bit. though ive never played around with them integrated into each other. most things (besides particles and 3d objects, and mabey text effects, which internaly, vegas dosnt have much in the way off) i can do in vegas, even basic masking like piano keys.

What you want, from the sound's of your post, is CinePaint (formerly known as "FilmGimp"). Get it for free at http://www.cinepaint.org. It's made specifically for "image by image" editing, and I've used it extensively on a recent (unreleased) project. The prime advantage of using it is that it lets you conveniently access a large number of images at a time, and has all the features you'd expect of an image editor like Fireworks or the GNU Image Manipulation Program (which is actually at the core of CinePaint). Not quite Photoshop, but close.

Problem is, the Windows port isn't done yet, do it'll only work for you if you're using Linux or Mac OSX.

For Windows, I hear AVISynth is wonderful for detailed and unusual editing tasks. It's also free and very well documented, so you might try looking at that as well.

Problem is, it only works on Windows, so good luck finding an equivalent for something else.
