Slow mpeg2 editing?

Post by Honorable Goat » Sat Aug 20, 2005 9:49 am

hey peoples

When I'm opening a mpeg2 file in Premiere 6.5 its ever so slow to load and god forbid if you ever want to open it by double clicking on the video file.

Is this premieres fault? My bad encoding? Mpeg2 sucks in 6.5?

Anyone able to shed some light on the situation, I tell ya it sucks :(

From Bauzi:

Could be the Fault of your PC!
Because mpeg2 is really higher than high quality with enormous ressolutions. A normal amv needs for 640x480 2000kps for very good quality and mpeg2 uses around 7500 kps! So I think your PC can´t handle with this

Make out of the mpeg2 files, XviD (<---- better than DivX!) or Divx files in the same ressolution, with the help of "Virtual Dub Mod" or any other programm. Your PC probably can handle with this or decrease the ressolution to 40x480 ot lower! Believe me you don´t need more than 640x480 XviD files

I thought premiere didn't like opening up xVid files? Or is that just divX encoded files ?

Ah well, cheers I'll try encoding them to xvid later on today :)

no, as far as someone's sig line says "don't use xvid/divx files in adobe premiere"

I believe there is a way to 'bait and switch' your video files so you can edit with a low res (faster for your computer to display) version of the video, and once you have your video edit, switch it with a hi res (will cause it to display choppy if you try to play it in premiere, but will encode it just fine) version of the vid... I've never had to do it, so someone else will have to explain how...

or you can search the guides to see if it's there (don't remember...)

good luck

Idea: Index the MPEG-2s in DVD2AVI/DGIndex (save .D2V files) and then load them with AVISynth. Seeking should go faster then.
