Constant crashing problem

Post by FastFive » Sat Oct 22, 2005 6:13 pm

Since loading the AMVapp suite and starting to work with footage, my Media Player and Windows Explorer are constantly crashing. Basically, whenever I touch a clip that I've pulled from my ripped DVD footage, it kills one application or the other. In Windows Explorer, often just single-clicking a pulled clip will crash, not even actually doing anything to the clip. In WIndows Media Player, anytime I try to play a clip I pulled, the clip comes out garbled, or completely unplayable. In ether case, Media Player subsequently crashes moments later.

Prior to loading the applications to rip DVDs and manipulate footage I never had either of these problems.

Anyone able to point out what might be causing this? And hopefully give me some pointers to fix it as well?

Does this happen when you try to open or do anything with the .vob files after ripping?

I couldn't tell you at the moment, I deleted the .vob files once I'd made one huge .avi file to work with. I'll try to re-rip a DVD later tonight and check. I don't remember it happening though. I worked with a few of them, moving them around and such and nothing ever crashed.

It seems to be confined strictly to only the .avi's that are pulled from the large .avi that was originally converted from the .vob's. (The .vob files converted into a .avi that was about 2GB large, I can view that one ok in Media Player, but eventually at some point it crashes the player. The smaller .avi files that I pull from that large one are the ones that crash Windows Explorer and won't play in Media Player at all.)

It should work better if you make an avisynth script and load it into virtualdub
if you already did this then you should probably just use virtualdub to view the avi files.
if you need a basic template for avisynth I can give you mine.
you'll need dvd2avi for this method. (everything can be found in vicbond007's guide to working with dvd footage)

VicBond's guide is exactly what I used, step by step. :)

I guess I'll just stick with VirtualDub for working with those .avis. And I'll just be careful not to touch them in Windows Explorer. :?

How much RAM do you have? You may want to consider using smaller .AVI files instead of one huge one. Most Windows video programs, i.e. Media Player and Movie Maker, don't utilize RAM very efficiently.

It may also have something to do with your Codecs. If you've had this problem just since you installed AMVapp, you might want to try unistalling and reinstalling the program and the codecs.

New info: Basically, anytime I run any .avi (even stuff I had no involvement with ripping etc), even if I watch the entire .avi without problems... when I go to close Media Player it crashes out instead of just closing. The error report message I get is this:
AppName: wmplayer.exe AppVer: 10.0.0.3646 ModName: ffdshow.ax
ModVer: 1.0.0.1 Offset: 0004721d
I've had problems with ffdshow before. Last time it happened I found that removing it from my system fixed the crashing... but, with all the new stuff I'm using now (AMVapp, DVD2AVI, VirtualDub etc), can I remove it?

Well, I guess it's not likely a RAM issue then. It does sound like you must be having issues with FFDshow. I would recommend uninstalling the FFDshow codec and see how everything runs without it. If that fixes your problem, then good. If you find that you have problems viewing some video files, then download the newest build of FFDshow from Sourceforge.net. Hopefully, that will help.

If even the latest version of ffdshow keeps crashing, it is possible to do without it. You'll just have to download and install all codecs manually. Do not use a codec pack, you'll regret until your next clean windows install. You've already got XviD (from the AMVapp) so that should take care of most your needs.
