Windows Movie Maker, getting footage
Well, whenever I do what everyone else does with the ripping footage right off of DVDs, WMM doesn't seem to recognize the file format. I think I was using AVSynth or something like that.

after ripping hte footage from the dvd, you need to do a few more steps to make the footage useable.
an example is as follows:
get vob files, convert to d2v (using dvd2avi), write AviSynth script, load into vdub/vdubmod, save as avi.
there are other ways, and no one method is "best", but the general process is very similar for most people.
