Cleaning up Live Action Footage

Post by SQ » Mon Oct 09, 2006 1:12 pm

So, I've got this shitty-ass handheld camera, and am planning something that may or may not involve other people's shitty cameras, as well.

When putting the footage through VDubMod, I have tried the noise prefilters, and some temporal smoothing, but it will still end up looking like crap.

Using the AWA Docs I made as a guideline for how bad my footage turns out, is there any way I can filter it short of using a higher-end camera?

With live-action video, noise is typically left in, because trying to remove it almost always leads to a significant loss of detail.
If you are intent on trying to filter it out though, some filters you might want to look into are: RemoveGrain, DeGrainMedian, FFT3dFilter, LRemoveDust, and FRFun7.

From Bauzi:

The best way for getting these plug ins is to search in:
AVI-Synt-folder ---> Docs ---> english ---> index
In this html file are a lot of plugins listed and more. It is like a handbook to avs. Also there is to nearly every plugin a link to it´s homepage.

Or use the simpel traditional way:
google

Ahh... sry...
You have only VDM... so: Get Avi.synth and learn how to use it.
It is one of those programms you have to use a lot, when you want best quality for amvs or just "normal" videos.

A lot depends on what you intend to do with the video, but assuming you are using DV and are preparing for DVD, then the following has worked well for me on my old DV camcorder:
LeakKernelBob(order=0, threshold=7)
ConvertToYv12()
Undot().Deen()
ConvertToYUY2()
assumebff().SeparateFields().selectevery(4,0,3).Weave()

If you want to burn it on a DVD then there is no need to deinterlace it. In opposite, it brings only an unnecessary loss of details and can make fast motions stutter. Deinterlacing of live action footage should only be done for playback on a computer or other progressive displaying devices.

I deinterlace because the cleaning filters I was using don’t like interlaced footage – in fact most cleaning filters are like this. This is also why my script re-interlaces at the end.
