An email will be sent to the video creator before the link is removed (currently planning on emailing on day 5 of consecutive link failed checks).
No, external links should be for backups, things that don't belong on the donut, or things from people who don't even know there is a donut (and probably don't remember the org).

I see two arguments for more than 7 days:
1. Indirect links to someones site, someone who has forgotten all about the org, but still has the videos. (And of course, doesn't check that email any more.) (Probably anything that isn't indirect will stop working because they rename stuff, anyway, you get the point.)

2. Don't make people work harder than they have to. In other words, don't remove links unless you're really really sure there's a good reason. (Yes, you as the programmer officially do not qualify as "people". Nice, isn't it? =)

The broken links and the thousands of "link problem" lines are taking up really huge amounts of the database.

I think that's a good reason personally :)

If someone knows their server can be down for over a week then they can always set up an indirect link that will always work - to a geocities site or something.

i personally dont see why ANYONE would bitch about this. i think this is one of the best idea's i have ever heard. it will save dataspace and it will eliminate the possiblities of trying to download a video with a link that doesnt even work and wasting your time.

willow, you said 7 days is not enough, so you think it would be a month? a month is just too damn long. if your link gets deleted, fix the problem and just make another one, it doesnt take that much time to make a direct link.

I don't see myself as exactly bitching.. Anyway, yes, for people who actually still remember the org, no problem with 7 days, even if I still think you should strive to minimize the hassle. But my other point is there are probably a few that don't, and if the links get deleted they *will* be lost forever. (And if the link is hidden after 7 days, but reappears magically if it starts working again within a month, how exactly does this make anything worse? (Except for Phade, and if he says it's too much trouble then ok, but that's the only reason I can see not to do it.))

re: the link problem lines AD mentioned:

Could those be set to expire after 60 days or something, or be deleteable by the member whose video it is?

My hosting's decent, but a little sketchy, and while it may go down for several hours once in a while, or even 2-3 days once a year or so, I get sick of looking at problem links from last November. Ya, I KNOW my host was down for 12 hours back then. Don't make me look at it for the rest of my life...

I think one week is plenty of time..

at one point my server moved.. I didn't take down the links.. and it took 3 weeks for my site to get back up again.

it wouldn't worry me if my links had been deleted, because it would mean people would know that the server is down.

I don't think it is detecting my links properly for some reason. I know the links are working because I see people downloading...

I agree. All of mine say "bad request" and yet upon right clicking on them, it brings up a window to save the .mpg and then proceeds to download it. So yeah, I know the files are there and people are definitely grabbing them based on my webserver's bandwidth.

I think something is screwy in the code. I believe I mentioned this to you in a conversation Phade. Although, I have tried both with spaces and with "%20" (which used to work). Suggestions?

Still broken. I got my links working by making new ones that were identical, but that lasted a day. Once the algorithm came by in the morning to check...nope.

It would appear Zarxrax and Fluxy are having the same problems based on my conversations with Phade and his with them.
