More Bandwidth and Revenue Needed

A suggestion about those ads, let the org users take them out. Offer text ads for those who just want simple and offer something like 160x120 or 320x240 images for those who like to make movie ads or the like. Just take the average # of downloads and do the math to figure out the CPM needed to cover bandwidth. On the admin side it'd give some extra income and on the user side we get the chance to pimp the hell out of a video to an audience we know for a fact downloads videos. There's really only two drawbacks I can see, first off is that some would switch from donating to buying ads instead but given the donator only features will keep some doing both and the fact only %1 of the org donates anyway that may noy be much of a problem. The other problem is that ads would have to be monitored to make sure they don't violate org guidelines but a system like the banners where an admin has to approve it before anyone else can even see it would cover that.

So, yeah, it's pretty low.Phade wrote:Less than 1%* of members downloading local videos are actually donating something to this site. I like the idea of being able to pay to have your amv advertised in the banner slot, for those who wish to have their video's well known I think it would work. As long as it stays appropriate, they could place whatever they want to advertise it, instead of the amv logo, which is just to the left anyways. The donator benefits would stay with the donator though, to encourage people to donate freely as well. The short animation idea to play back a clip sounds interesting, but to play back a actual clip I think would slow down the site too much for some? I'd prefer the advertisements to stay the same size, the sizes godix mentioned aren't that big, but they would seem obtrusive.
What's the number of members we have anyways? I thought we hit 400,000 and are coming up on 500,000. Unless this doesn't apply to the mainsite. "We have 488206 registered users"

You see, I would love to donate, but fact is I don't have any money. I have barely enough to pay for rent and food and other bare necessities of life. Therefore I use college computers to download AMVs because I cannot afford an own internet connection.
I promise to donate as soon as I graduate and get a job, but before that it's impossible, bad conscience or not. Sorry.

Mailing Donations
Yeah, I didn't know you could mail in donations. What is the address for doing so?

i'm against advertising though. if the costs - donations gap increases, how are you going to draw the line on when advertisements become too intrusive, tacky, or annoying?

Letting members buy banners sounds fun. $10 for a month's banner to your video info or your website or whatever. I read a site that does that when people want to plug their own sites without spamming the place. It seems less commercial than actual ads, for some reason. Eh, anyway.
I'd seed it 24 hours a day for a month, I promise.
OK, out of ideas now.
Thought: can we pretty, pretty please have a torrent of the VCA nominees next year? Even one torrent per category? I tried to be a good honest voter and watch everything, point one, and point two, even as a no-name editor in the first round, my hits shot way up during the VCAs. I can't imagine how much traffic that equals multiplied by x videos and y downloaders.pen-pen2002 wrote: Bittorrent supplement for extremly popular videos: +

On the topic of donating, why not just have a limited number of videos per month, along with a download cap? However, although many people mean to donate, some are too lazy. Give them a gold name, pictures where they want. All the ideas are good, especially the banner one which allows a link to a site. And Bittorant is extremely fast, when you have a lot of seeders.
