Um, all the banners we've got right now ARE non-popups...Lu Tze wrote:I suppose this has been proposed a couple of times, but what about just adding a few non-popup banners (since popups get blocked by most browsers) ?

I do not think that word means what you think it means.Lu Tze wrote:Personally, I find those pledge-drive-popups rather annoying
That is, the .org has no pop-up windows, except in the PM notification.
That, and there's no real 1:1 user-{IP,MAC} correlation.it would lead to multiple accounts. Of course, you could check IPs or something, but I think that would also generate more problems than it would solve.
Enforcing this is tricky. The guide already encourages people to use XviD in a very efficient, procedural, easy-to-understand configuration (it's really pretty good -- I've tested it*), and most people don't even use that. What makes you think they'll use more advanced/bleeding-edge stuff like any H.264 implementation?In the long run it might also help a little to encourage people to create smaller files. In my opinion, there are way too many oversized files in the database. For example I compressed Euphoria to about 2/5 the size using the somewhat outdated XVid, and it looks almost same. Reducing the size limit to 70 MB or 50 MB and encouraging people to use newer codecs, like X264, would also help in the long run.
* I think I still know what that test was testing.

$ = attention
What about charging $1 to get a site banner put up? It would be a guarentee that the member would get their banner put up, even if they had to edit it a few times first. I notice that for a while there were about 10 banner submissions a day. If each of those people paid one dollar, that would amount to $10/day. Perhaps it could still be free to submit, but there would be no guarantee that the banner would get up on the site.
Google on the .org?! The world is coming to an end...(thinks about paying bills vs. donating.....) If everyone gets their shit together & donates, will the ads go away? Not just as an option, but for everyone? I personally do not support advertising in any form, because I think there is too much on the web already.

You realise that without advertising tv shows, web sites, magazines, newspapers and radio wouldnt exist. Advertising is a wonderfull thing. Without it most people here would be dead bored 99% of the time.Alternababe wrote:I personally do not support advertising in any form, because I think there is too much on the web already.

Maybe not for you.BasharOfTheAges wrote:The adds aren't really an issue. o.o;;trythil wrote:{modifying-the-past-omg-Orwell-is-jizzing-in-his-grave}
What I was pointing out, though, is that you don't have to see this stuff, and thus fighting it, for now, is moot. When advertising systems find a way to force themselves upon you, then you can start the fight up again.

Just my 2 cents
You know why i didn't pledge, even a small amount?
Because in europe we simply use bank accounts to transfer money.
I would donate immediatly if i saw an IBAN and a SWIFT number on the webpage. I have no bank checks here and will never send money using mail. I don't want to use paypal because i don't have a paypal account. And last time i wanted to open one, it asked my credit card number to identify me. I do not trust paypal to keep my credit card number safe.
I would probably not pay a great amount (i use a-m-v.org only from times to times) but i would pay a bit
