The avatars (hoping u were talking about that 
) are simply pictures, either gif or jpg, of 80x80 (right?)
You can change them at your profile, at the bottom.
To make one, use a program like Photoshop or Photoimpact, however even Paint can make one. Just make sure you save it as jpg or gif.
If the picture is small enough you can load them up on the site, otherwise use a free picture upload site or your own (however some sites block external usage) and set it up at your profile...
