Here's my burning question, since when was procreation such a heinous word? Why is the 'f' word so horrible and inulting? To me, this is nothing compared to the 'n' word - at least in American society. The only stigma on the 'f' word comes from elementary school children who walk around whispering how they got in trouble for saying....the 'f' word. And then it gets marked from songs and television because adults want to keep the stigma there and make the word evil. Why? What about that single word is so insulting that it gets people up in arms?azulmagia wrote:George Carlin (I think) wrote:Is the word puck 75% obscene?
I'm not being sarcastic here - I never understood it as a child hearing people coin the phrase 'the f word' and I still don't understand it now that I'm older. Sure, people use it in insults, but that's no different from its synnonym - screw. Are we going to outlaw that word as well? And then if someone wants to mention how they put their desk together with a certain metal object that just so happens to rotate they'll have themselves writing about **** and then what? It looks like they were saying something profane. Why? Because there's something about these words that remind people of sex? Or is it because they're crude words?
Words can't hurt you unless you empower them first. Placing astericks for the 'f' word *makes* it bad. Having people write out 'the f word' or 'the c word' or 'the n word' makes them bad. Alone, they're just words. The only bad comes from what power you give them. And of the three, the n word is the only one that insults people every time it's used because of where it comes from. The others have legitimate use in the english language and did not originate as 'curse words' to make people upset when they see them.
[No, I'm not arguing with the filter proposal, I just don't see the point in making certain words even more 'evil' then they are already deemed by society.]

If you stop people form saying the word "fuck" then profanity and insults will simply become more imaginative for those who so desire to. It'll change from "Mother fucker" or "fag" to "Fornicating semen gargling fudge packer"
Asuming those that curse do so to evoke a response in the reader. If it's casual swearing then I'm pretty sure a filter would get the job done.

So in other words, one part of the community is waging war on another part of the community because they take their community seriously enough to want to do so. Then they tell the powerless side to get over the loss cause it's just an online community. I'm glad people make so much sense." -- Tab
