An hour or evn half-hour time limit coupled with a character limit sounds like the best plan. If people want to use these things for what the title implies, A journal, they have a right to expect that others should be forced to do the same.

2 Cents: IMO, the journals are very entertaining and I really don't care who puts stuff in. It's a really great "tool" (if you wish) to get to know people without actually having to talk to them directly (just look at the journal history).
I think it's one of the gems of the ORG, not just because I use it, but because you get to know the attitudes of the users and editors. I only have a few points to defend about the Journals:
1. People who use it as a chat: compared to ALL the users on the ORG, there are about what, <100 or so regular users of Journals?? Most people who post only post a few times a month. So without regular users the Journals wouldn't be used as much and would be removed.
2. Abuse: There are less than 5 users that I know of that only use the Journals to attack and ridicule. There is no use for that. Regardless if you ban them, they'll be back.
3. To bring up the point for #2, filtering: Easiest way IF the programmers want to, is to filter out names. Add a section in the user profile stating to not to display entries from XXXX (separated by commas like adding proxy settings)
4. A journal is just a journal, it's like passing notes in class, who gives a darn! IMO, as long as there are no threats to peoples lives and that the profanity is down to a minimum, then there is no harm. We don't NEED to read posts from getaids, DQY, Ayanefan etc etc etc....
5. It's a flipping journal! As per #4 and 5.
6. GOSUB{Repeat_#5_ infinitely.TillOrgSelfDestructs}

I don't know how to respond to that.... your right??? But then we click on the journal entry, if we didn't care about the note, we wouldn't try to read it. I do it, you do it, the people who started this thread do it. Why? Most likely it's like the Howard Stern show; to hear what he's going to say next.Cornwiggle wrote:

You're making a horrible example.ayanefan wrote:I don't know how to respond to that.... your right??? This isn't like passing notes. It's more like writing on the blackboard to your friend during class. Don't you think people would be annoyed when they see you using it like a messenger when they're right next to you? Just like journals, you all LOVE each other so much I know you all have each other on your instant messengers, why can't you take it there and stop being such attention whores?

Wait, out of all of this, I didn't read anything about what you want the journals to be used for. All I hear is complaining from a few people.Cornwiggle wrote: This isn't like passing notes. For me, here's what I expect from jounals:
1. A social, indirect, gathering area.
2. Location where you can put your thoughts down.
The only restrainst I would have is to keep profanity out and under no circumstances to directly threaten anyone with death.
Who else?

But you don't need to chat when you have personal messages or instant messangers. And I hate seeing journals "I'm bored" "Wow, I'm hungry"ayanefan wrote:Wait, out of all of this, I didn't read anything about what you want the journals to be used for. They're used as chat rooms too much. I think limiting it so you have to a certain number of words, at least it would eliminate stuff like above, and they'd be foreced to say a bit more and hopefully make it a bit more...useful.

That is more of a pet peeve.Cornwiggle wrote: But you don't need to chat when you have personal messages or instant messangers. And I hate seeing journals "I'm bored" "Wow, I'm hungry"

Answer my question, what do you want to use the journals for. Not: what do you not want to use the journals for.
