A great restriction idea for the Donut/carrot
There have been discussions about the fact that there were more and more bad videos on the carrot. Yet we didn't find any good idea to stop people uploading their videos, because allowing someone to upload and someone else not was elitism...
Now I've got an Idea :
We should add a rule "do not upload videos made from downloaded footage"
1) because it's written somewhere in the rules of the website (even if few people stick to this rule) that amv shouldn't be done witth d/l footage
2)it would stop the access of the carrot to crappy videos with subtitles and stuff...
What do you think ?
(well, I would have to remove some of my vids from the server, but...)
yea, I know. greatest idea ever.

Well that would remove a *significant* proportion of the videos on the carrot.
...not to mention some very good ones.
For example, Right Now Somone is Reading This Title - uses downloaded Daicon 4 footage - because that's the only real place to find that footage.
So, are you going to remove one of the most famous amvs (and one of the most highly ranked at that) because it used downloaded footage? Similarly Euphoria - I'm fairly certain it used downloaded Rahxephon.
I think the focus has to be:
Encourage people to edit videos with regards to certain ethics (Not using pirate software, downloaded footage/music that you have not purchased etc) but leave it there. We can't go forcing people to not do this and in certain cases we don't want to, to be frank.
I just don't think it's the place of the org to be completely dictatorial about quality - encourage, yes... prescribe, no.

I like the idea, but as people get more opinions (they people who use downloaded footage will most likely get lower opinions) they're videos will get better (in general and in quality). They'll start to make higher quality videos, which will result in them wanting to take down their old videos. I don't want to upload some of my old videos because they would get crappy opinions and I used downloaded footage. I'm not going to lie and say it straight out, so those videos will not be up for download. Of course to complete the Org's database, I will offer those videos to anyone who asks me personally.
Mainly, what I suggest is a take down feature for the Donut. People will be able to delete what videos they want, but must have it confirmed. Something of that sort, but people shouldn't be forced to do anything.

BTW, I made those videos with downloaded footage before I found out about the Org. And I have been improving quality and generally with each video I create.

Actually, the first version used the AVI that was floating around on the web, but the current version uses MPEG-2 from LD footage graciously provided by iserlohn. Technically it was downloaded from him, but at a higher quality than much downloaded stuff. (of course, the clip is iffy 'cuz it's 20 years old, but that's another issue)AbsoluteDestiny wrote:For example, Right Now Somone is Reading This Title - uses downloaded Daicon 4 footage - because that's the only real place to find that footage.

AD brings up a very good valid point....but how can you REALLY determine what uses downloaded footage? What if they captured some horrible fansub with subs? Not all videos using digisubs have subtitles in the video...Basicly, you're saying to delete all the videos that look like mud, because they must have used downlaoded footage? Don't think this idea will work at all...

I honestly don't think we should go through with this. The Org is a video database, so it should have every video that has been made to be uploaded, even if it crappy and uses downloaded footage. It is an anime music video and should be recognized on the org and available for download.

Considering that the RULES of the org state that edittors SHALL NOT USE DOWNLOADED footage, it seems counterproductive to allow videos with downloaded footage onto the carrot and donut. As it stands, there is little to disuade people to change their habits.
At the very least people uploading should have to click a number of user agreement/promises that indicate that there video does not contain downloaded footage.
