mabe some backrounds other then subsilver? demonsealks got lots so why cain't this site?

If you have or made a very good-looking phpb theme, maybe you can recommend it to the forum admin and ask then to upload it, if they prefer.

They are quite widely available - however most people like the default subsilver best, so why bother

Themes are a little trickier here because we have our own buttons (like the amv profile button)

The default theme is a little too bright. Though it doesnt bother me much, it would be good to have something like a warm blue. I'm sure our custom icon issue wouldnt be too much of a problem if someone could spend a few minutes with photoshop.

I'm not sure it's intergrated into the themes at all though... I'd have to check. If it wasnt then it would look the same for everyone.
