I will always pimp DefilerPak at the cure for your codec ills.

And I will always pimp ffdshow, because it gives you what you need for nearly any video here, and nothing more. Well, not that I've noticed anyway.

x2

I would suggest that over codec packs.

HOWEVER, for 90% of cases just getting the latest versions of XviDand DivX codecs should suffice.

This is very difficult to read... If I'm misunderstanding you, let me know.

When you click the local button, left-click that button, you should get a pop-up that lets you choose where to download the video to. After that, you open that folder and the video should be there - so you can open it in windows media player.
...they just start...
Is this the direct videos? When a video starts playing (without making you download and open it first), then you're streaming that video. You can do this with some direct videos. If you 'left-click' the link, it should download instead. None of the local videos with 'just start' - they can't be streamed. If your media player is trying to stream those videos, you may have to change your settings.

Or you can download a different web-browser. I don't believe streaming is a problem for firefox or opera, both free replacements for internet explorer.

There's Free, then there's 'free if you want to put up with ads'. Firefox and Opera, respectively.
