I've studied for six years by myself and private tutors. My trips to Japan also help.

Well, at least I know 2 languages. French and english.

J'aime l'idée que je sais deux langues parce que ces deux langues sont les langues nationales du Canada! :D

I want to take Japanese lessons next semester, possibly even minor in Japanese, but my college doesn't offer beginning Japanese in the Spring...

I been trying to learn japanese for like 1/2 a year and I'm half assing it. Good thing I'm making it my minor incollege :?

anyway I found a goodway to learn words is to read something such as a book/poem and its translation

for example a quote from Takeda Shingen:
hito wa shiro hito wa ishigaki hito wa hiro;
natake wa mikata ada wa teki nari.

Translated means:
the people are the castle, the stone wall, the moat;
compassion make a friend; vengeance a foe.

or a poem by Basho:
Muzan ya na
kabuto no shita no
kirigirisu

means:
Alas for mortality
Under the helmet
-A grasshooper

Another great way I found to learn the symbols and even helps with some kanji is actually included with windows.

The language bar. Set it up so u can type in romaji ie. hito wa shiro and it makes it into japanese symbols and kanji if you'd like it to.
hito wa shiro hito wa ishigaki hito wa hiro;
nasake wa mikata ada wa teki nari

A mon avis, francais c'est trop complexique. Je deteste "Dr. Mrs. Vandertramp.". C'est ennuit.

Damn canadian laws.

And for all you japanese out there: Watashi wa zasshi desu!

Yes. I know what I said. And I'm learning right now from www.japanese-online.com, as I don't know where I can learn Japanese 'round here.

I found the best way to learn Japanese is to sit one's ass down and study. Which is the best thing next to actually living in Japan and studying it.
