Bzzt. People take offense when you sharply disagree and call someone stupid/berate them Milo. Theres a difference between making a point and hammering it into someones skull. Oh and I'm sorry that I'm confused about how being arrogant and stuck up are different from elitism, which is what in essence people are getting on your case for. Forgive me for sounding Dannywilson-ish here (he's right you know) but boo hoo, you'd think that being such a "smart" person you'd understand that lots of people have a problem with intellectual superiors. While the problem isn't valid, I've known a few too many intellectuals who have a bad case of arrogance/elitism. So IMO many people are justified in their offense at the elitist's actions. I've said it once and I'll say it again, elitism sucks. Not only is it annoying, it's also really really boring to talk to someone who always thinks they're right. Oh yeah. All the studying and books in the world don't make you any less of a dumbass.

But there are those who think that speaking formally is arrogance. They associate formal speech with the rich and snobbish. While it is true that persons of wealth and arrogance have a tendency to speak formally, the reverse simply isn't true.

I said it because, I would rather people form their own opinions than merely listen to and agree with what I say. Indeed, if given the choice I would rather people follow and hold true to their own hearts and convictions than blindly agree with someone just because they are 'learned'.UncleMilo wrote:Why bother to say that? I've noticed that many on this board take great offense to people with knowledge. I mean... if you've studied things and read books and actually have knowledge on hand and try to use that knowledge to explain your points, there are many on this board who instantly get offensive at you... call you arrogant and stuck up and accuse you of acting superior.
Green Eggs and Ham
In this little story we are introduced to Sam I Am. Sam I Am has a platter of Green Eggs and Ham, which he feels are quite wonderful, and he tries to share them with the story's protagonist. Yet the fellow is rather snooty, and looks down on Green Eggs and Ham, and refuses to eat them. Perhaps he read a review that said they were aweful...or maybe he merely disliked the color green, but regardless he was basing his decision on a preconcieved opinion despite never having tried them before. But by story's end, Sam I Am manages to convince him to try them, and behold he likes them, in fact he loves them!
Sam I Am was patient and didn't instantly give up on the protagonist. he didn't lambast him as a fool because he refused to try the Green Eggs and Ham, rather he tried to offer it to him in a variety of places, in a variety of ways...the point is, eventually the protaginist was willing to try the Green Eggs and Ham. Maybe he would not have liked them, but the fact of the matter is is that Sam I Am was willing to offer Green Eggs and Ham, and the protaginist eventually was willing to try them.
As a teacher I can provide facts and offer up learning opportunities which provide potential explanations to large questions, but it is up to the student to decide on the answers based on the experience. So long as my students make an attempt at understanding why something is the way it is based on what they themselves have experienced, discussed and thought about I am happy. It is when they are lazy and don't try that I am rather disappointed, and I might grumble, but I certainly don't give up on them. It is when you give up on students and brush them off as a lost causes that you have failed as a teacher.

Via Michael BaroneGermany is opposed because Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder was in danger of losing the September election. He decided to appeal to the very small number of German voters who support the neo-Nazi and former Communist parties by opposing the United States and making nationalist sounds. He succeeded, narrowly. Analysis of the election returns shows that he reduced the percentages the neo-Nazi and former Communist parties got just enough to give his Social Democrats a narrow parliamentary majority.
Up until August 2002, Schroeder had solidly supported the United States on Iraq. He assured George W. Bush in Berlin and in the Oval Office that he would stick with him on the issue. When I was in Berlin in July, I was assured by high-level Social Democrats and Christian Democrats, including the then defense minister, that the consensus in Germany was to support the United States on Iraq. Schroeder switched in August in a cheap political maneuver to win the votes of people who believe in totalitarian government. This was not a principled response to Bush administration diplomacy. This was the response of a second-rate, shifty politician on the verge of a well-deserved electoral defeat. It tells us nothing about long-term German policy. Schroeder's party has since been repudiated in state elections. It is unlikely that he will be chancellor very much longer. It is not at all clear that his current position will be followed by later German governments.
(Sorry for the delay in replies...lotta stuff flying around here.)

Hi,
French guy speaking here, once again forgive my english skills.
I just want to say that I agree with people here who have understood that war is a bad thing. I won't argue more on that point, because everything has been said, and if there are people who still don't understand this, nothing can be done for them.
G bush is mad. I still don't understand why he's America's president.
When WWII or WWI ended in Europe, what people wanted was that THIS WAS the last war ever (which wsn't the cas, but...)
When the USA were attacked on 9/11, Bush's only feeling was to take revenge --> this makes me sick.
There is a kind of "gentle" anti-americanism feeling in France since McDonald's "restaurants" invaded our holy land of good food . This was a long time ago. Yet the french don't hate America. They just don't like Bush.
One more thing : I'd like to know the ratio of Americans who are actually for war in Iraq. Id it's less than 50%, you should think about what "democracy" is in this country.
Being powerful doesn't give you the rights to become "world's cops"...there are laws that Saddam Hussein broke...lol, Bush is breaking the laws by begenning a war without UN's authorization...
So what ? Innocents are goona die, just for OIL...
Beee, I'm really sick.
THE american guy I really respect : Michael Moore. Watch "bowling for Columbine". Understand how America is seen from the outside. Stop watching your belly, USA !
Well, I'm angry. People will die. Thanks Bush, I hate you.

you see, that's where premptive strike comes in. If i "disarm" you, meaning, i kill you, then there's no chance you can attack me.El Banana wrote:Not if when I slapped you back you fell to your knees, trembling. Or how about if when you slap me, I kick you really hard in the nuts?
O wait, I've got it, you slap me, I run, climb onto a tree, and start hurling rotten fruit at you...
