What you guys got, i'll thake all of j00 on.
but seriously, i'm very lucky to have a master such as mine , he is a direct desendant of the man who invented the Arnis stick-fighting style; lapul opul, this was also the man who decapitated magellian.
anyway my master hold 4 world titles in Arnis and is a 6th degree (dan) in it, as well as being a 5th in Tae kwon do.
from what i understand i've been told that his skills are far above his rank (more like a 7th or 8 th degree) so i'm almost scared when i spar with him.
in the ring he is pretty nice to you depending on your belt but if you leave your self he will give you a BIG heads up with a rib or head check.
as far as i go,
I've be taking tae kwon do on and off for about 9 years now.
and i've self taught myself a little bit of boken techniques and other sword styles.
also i was taught a long time ago how to harness my chi and focus it, i suck at it now, it was actually kind of scary, i remember about an hour of meditation and then i let loose with a punch and went through like 6 or 7 wooden boards, this was when i was 10 or 11, i haven't been able to do it since; guess it was a one time thing.(damn)

I spent all five years entire highschool (yes I was one lazy bastard like that) life street fighting. I don't mean wussy schoolyard-scuffles, I'm talking about knockdown, drag-out, bone-breaking fights. Regular Slobber-knockers! It was actually fun beating the tar out of yon Football or Wrestling star. They thought they were the shit, so we (the out-crowd) decided to start dragging them one by one out and beating the ever living fuck out of them. It's kind of funny to see your foe pull you to the ground and engage a "submission hold" for a minute or so before they become tired and weak. After that you just break free and pummel said foe until you hear that defining snap. It might not have been the most satiating fight, but the bragging rights the next day as the class nerd gets to laugh relentlessly at the richy jock bandaged and bruised.
I took seven years prior to that of karate, but noon of it actually pertains to real life. It’s not a matter of what moves you know or how strong you are. Its stamina, and resourcefulness. And knowing enough to kick you opponent until they scream bloody murder.

The practical type, eh?Mr Pilkington wrote: I took seven years prior to that of karate, but noon of it actually pertains to real life. It’s not a matter of what moves you know or how strong you are. IMHO, Karate and the martial arts are just that - a functional art. Although quite effective theoretically, tt's more than simply about fighting moves.
Practical, not really.
Indeed. Cheap is the main feature of it, that's one of my major considerations in acquisitions as well. The hamon, or the wavy line, is a temperline indicating the two phases/gradients of steel present. The Banana wrote:Eh, dunno. It was quite cheap, has the nice little wave-pattern-thingy, and is sharp. Ergo, it cuts, although may not withstand use against other swords.
Concerning use against other swords, it may or may not absorb lateral vibration and stress, however no blade is designed for edge-to-edge usage, you know?
See next comment:
What type of failure occured? If it broke off at the handle, I think I know your problem. If it resulted in a fracture, especially at resonative center, center of gravity, or point of inflection then it's likely to be the steel tempering.'SQ' wrote:And I own a bokken, Shinai, and HAD an iaito... Bought it in Carcossone, France. Too bad for me I didn't know it was a wall hanger.. And one sad day it just went "snap" when I was practicing a few cottas... =\
...
And plus school armor..
Good god, if I had to buy my own armor... $1000-$2000 a set...
SLO (Sword-Like Object) Failure Point:
In that case, in the words of teh Cornell Fracture Group:

I see where you two are coming from - in most schools of martial arts I've seen, very little emphasis is done on full-combat. Sparring is good for the reflexes and to get a slight feel of battle, but when you look at two people sparring, their moves will be calculated, kind of like a game of chess.
Fortunately, my master back home did emphasize quite a bit on street fighting. One of the students was mugged, and he beat the crap out of the two thieves. It all depends on how and what is taught.

I like bugging people. Deal with it.

... And why I'm going to buy a REAL practice sword this time... When I get money.
