More about explosives eh? well...
Go to your local welding shop. They should have plenty of liquid nitrogen. Tell them it's for a school experiment and have them pour some into (you must bring the container) one of those coffe thermos' (the bigger the better). Don't screw the lid on to tight because pressure will quickly build up in the thermos.
Now, you can put some liquid nitrogen in a bottle and add hot water, then put the lid on. That makes for a nice explosion. Freezing stuff with it is really cool. I think you can condense oxygen out of the air to make liquid oxygen if you have liquid nitrogen. Fill a ballon with air and attach the open end of it to a coke bottle. Dip the end of the bottle into the LN2 (liquid nitrogen) and watch as a liquid forms. It should be sky blue, which means it is oxygen. LO2 (liquid oxygen) is over ten times denser than regular oxygen.
LO2 is nice and explosive when you get something soaked with it, you could try cotton balls or maybe an old T-shirt. I suggest you stand very far away and start with small quantities of LO2 though.
You can also make a bitchin' rocket out of LN2 and LO2, but I ain't sayin nothin.

This is the best one I know, its very fun, simple and cheap.
You need a regular candle, a metal bottle cap, and a glass of water.
-You set the bottle cap anywhere you can heat it up with the candle without burning yourself.
-You light the candle and fill the bottle cap with wax.
-You heat the wax with the candle 'till it boils.
-Once it's boiling, you move the candle so that the flame touches the wax.
-If it's hot enough, the way should ignite.
-Step away, and let a small stream of water fall on the burning wax (water guns work too).
Boom.
Like so...
