Borough Police Chief Thomas Young said Tuesday that the 12-year-old had fantasized openly for months about ``taking over the school,'' but his friends didn't take him seriously.
On June 4, the boy took three rifles, two shotguns and two handguns from his father's gun cabinet and stashed them in a large duffel bag. The school does not have metal detectors, and students were allowed to bring large bags that day because of a planned trip to a swimming pool.
When they arrived at school, the boy and his friends went to a bathroom, and the boy began taking the guns from the bag, Young said.
The friends warned teachers, and the school was immediately locked down and police were called, Young said. Officers were approaching the bathroom when they heard a shot; the boy died from a single gunshot wound.
. It's this sort of irresponsibility, assuming it was unlocked, that gives responsible firearms owners and gun rights supporters a bad name. If it was locked, then the father probably left the key lying around.
