US Military Draft

Post by SQ » Tue Sep 30, 2003 7:47 pm

"Perhaps you have seen the catchy TV ads for the various branches of the United States military. You know, the ones that tell you to "be all you can be...in the Army!" In the last decade, these advertisements have become necessary because compulsory military service (otherwise known as "the draft") no longer exists in the United States. Compulsory service, long required during time of war, was reinstituted in the United States in 1940, as the United States was on the brink of World War II. The draft remained in effect through the turbulent 1960s but was suspended by President Nixon in 1973. In the late 1970s, Congress passed legislation officially halting the draft."

So, if this is the case... If it was officially halted, why do guys over 18 still have to sign up for it in Highschool?

And, if it were brought back, would it include women? Since we now have that equality law and everything...

No, women would become telephone operators and mechanics, thusly taking over the two most important roles a male can play in this day and age.

But you know how many American women are stupid now and will file lawsuits saying "We should be included in the draft" and crap like that...

Plus, that doesn't answer why guys are still signing up for a draft that doesn't exist... :?

In a crisis requiring a draft, men would be called in sequence determined by random lottery number and year of birth.

Why do you have a sprinkler system in a building if the building isn't on fire?

however, don't dismiss that women can shoot as well and are damned fine at it. Give a third of the women in Saudi Arabia guns and some training and Saudi Arabia will become a democracy overnight.

Women dont have to register for the draft but the fact stay all males are required to register Just they can only use it in time of war. I dont see them starting to call on the draft to get solder any time soon because I can promise you that doing that is political suicide and the congress men who vote for it will be voted out of office in a heart beat. Plus the president of the time would be replace very fast

Draft = Stupid, except in defensive wars, in which case I say everyone fights.
The best effects are the ones you don't notice.

Well there is something else very important to think about.

If a nation's power is it's military (though I think it's the economy) and the population in the states is a fast aging one....then what happens if there is a war 30 years from now? A really bad one?

Well equality issues aside, I would guess recruiting women would be a fairly big thing given a scenario like that. That and dumping jailed folks into the wars....
