Possible hijacking attempts on my computer?

Post by Veldrin » Sun Nov 23, 2003 12:17 pm

I know alot of us here on the org are computer wizzes you pretty much have to be when you spend half your day on one. Anyway normally I can delete spyware and viruses, but this time I have possibly been infected and I cannot figure out how to cleanse my system. Here are my 2 problems.

1. I have had this problem with internet explorer lately where it randomly decideds that when I open explorer its going to change the homepage (http://www.comcast.net/comcast.html) to a different page that obviously has ties into a search/porn thing (www.rightfinder.net/hp). When that happens two new links show up in my favorites. I didnt check the addresses but the text is "Find anything on the web" "Find Porn on the web". Also since I have had this problem when I type in an URL and press enter it comes up with this thing that says the website couldnt be found, but its obvious that its lieing to me and wants me to use its 'searching' ability to find what I need. I was just wondering if anyone has had this problem before and knows how to fix it.

2. The second problem I have has only been appearing for the last 2 days or so. Everytime I start up my computer windows says something about how two files called Fntldr.exe and Fntldr.dll are missing. I searched for the file name on google and it came up with one site (http://www.computing.net/windows95/wwwb ... 51747.html) that another person like me has the file and it appears, he says, is from Luckysearch.net. Now I know I hav'nt had any luckysearch related incidents lately so I am ruleing out lucky for now.

I had similiar problem as you have now. Sometimes it would just jump to some porn page. I reinstalled windows/explorer and problem went away.

You might want to try the same thing.

I downloaded a program called CwShredder. It removed some stuff and fixed some stuff. I am going to wait a day or two before I do anything else to see if it fixed problem number 1.

I also have a similar problem. Some kind of adware/spyware has hijacked the built in search bar on IE. So now everytime I open IE after turning on my computer the search thing opens up and at the top it says something like "Search the web" and has a little rainbow design behind it, but otherwise the backgound is white. Also, random search page things will pop up (the REALLY ANNOYING kind, you know, the ones that take up the whole screen, and you have to use alt+F4 to get rid of.) Then in my history this shows up: www.hotsearchbox.com/dir.php
I know this is some kind of evil, and I want to get rid of it, but Norton System Works (or System Scan more preceisly) won't pick it up.
So is there a way to get rid of this without having to reinstall Windows/IE?
